MD 6th District Debate Tonight

George Wenschhof

The challengers to incumbent eight term Republican Roscoe Bartlett finally have the opportunity to debate him tonight beginning at 7:30 PM ET. The debate is sponsored by the Republican and Democratic student clubs at Frederick Community College (FCC) located on Oppossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland.

After first announcing the debate would be between Bartlett and Democratic challenger Jennifer Dougherty, Libertarian candidate Gary Hoover was added. Faculty adviser Dr. Kerr informed me a member of Congressman Bartlett's staff requested the debate include Mr Hoover. The only reason for the initial omission was due to a lack of any student representation of the Libertarian Party.

The debate will begin and end with two minute opening and closing statements from each candidate. A FCC student will introduce each candidate. Dr. Kerr is the moderator and he will prompt each of the twelve questions to be asked of the candidates. The reason I say prompt, is the questions are videotaped from FCC students and voters in the 6th district.

Each candidate will have the opportunity to be the first to answer four of the questions. The candidate answering the question first will have 2 minutes to respond and the other two candidates will have one minute to respond.

Voters in the 6th district should be thankful for the efforts put forth by the FCC students as this promises to be a very informative debate. The candidates will also each have a display table in the lobby so you will be able to pick up campaign material. So, plan to attend!

If you are unable to attend, replays of the debate will be broadcast on Frederick, Maryland FCC Cable channel 23 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 to 9:30 PM ET prior to the election.
