Dem Campaign Chatter 10-8-2008

George Wenschhof

Today, Obama is in Indianapolis, Indiana - I attended a great concert in Indianapolis back in the 70's while in undergrad school. The headline band was The Doobie Brothers and the back up bands were REO Speedwagon and Bachman Turner Overdrive. The latter two bands were not known nationally yet.

Indianapolis is where former Mayor Richard Lugar incorporated surrounding towns and created Unigov, one of two cities in the country to use this governing system. I interviewed Lugar back during that time. Indiana has become a battleground state in this election - it has not voted Democratic since 1964.

Biden is in Tampa (where a great Steakhouse named Berns is located) and Ft Myers, Florida. Michelle Obama is in Keene, New Hampshire. Michelle is also the guest on CNN's "Larry King Live" tonight at 9:00 PM ET and Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" at 11:00 PM ET.

Obama wins debate handily - A CNN/Opinion Research poll conducted after the debate showed that viewers felt Obama performed the best 54% to 30% for McCain. The poll also showed viewers felt Obama was a stronger leader with 54% to McCain with 43%. In the question that is always important in the voters mind, the viewers felt Obama was more likeable by a 65% to 28% margin. Wow, that is 2 to 1! Not a good sign for the McCain campaign with less than 4 weeks to go. CNN.com has more here.

After debate, Obama drops in on Al Gore fundraiser - Al and Tipper Gore were holding a fundraiser for Obama and the Democratic National Committee and they happen to live in Nashville. Obama stopped by after the debate to visit with those who attended the fundraiser. Swamppolitics.com has more here.

Obama campaign releases new ad blasting McCain's health care proposal - It is entitled "Taketh" as it describes how McCain would give a health care credit, but then he would tax your health care benefits, including those provided for you by your employer. Watch it here.

Global financial crisis continues - Central Banks of the US, England, Canada, Swiss, and Europe coordinated a half point drop in the interest rate in an effort to stem the growing financial problems. The Dow opened 200 down and had recovered and was up 126 by 10:00 AM ET. The NY Times has more here.
