Dem Campaign Chatter 10-7-2008

George Wenschhof

Today, Obama is in Nashville, Tennessee- where the second presidential debate will be held tonight. After the death of his mother-in-law, Biden has cancelled events for another day and remains home in Wilmington, Delaware. Michelle Obama is in Jacksonville, North Carolina and then heads to Nashville, Tennessee to be with her husband at the debate.

--------------------

Second Presidential debate tonight - This is the second of three presidential debates and will be held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. It will be moderated by Tom Brokaw and broadcast live beginning at 9:00 PM ET on cable by CNN, MSNBC and others - check your local listings.

Expecting a more free wheeling debate tonight? Although billed as a Town hall style meeting, strict rules are in place which will limit any meaningful interaction. Brokaw will select questions from 100-150 uncommitted likely voters who were determined by Gallup to be representative of the demographics of the country.

Brokaw will select the question, the individual will have the camera on them while they ask the question but the camera is not allowed to be on the questioner to see their reaction to the answer given. Neither Brokaw or the questioner will be allowed follow up questions and the candidates are not allowed to ask each other a question.

Remember when Gore invaded Bush's space in one of the debates in 2000? Well, they have defined a circle around each candidate they are not allowed to leave during the debate. So much for a free wheeling town hall debate. Read more here.

We will live blog here on Air-it-Out with George during the debate beginning at 9:00 PM ET.

Obama campaign airs new ad - This is a good one. Talks about how the McCain campaign knows if they keep talking about the economy, they are going to lose. The ad points out McCain is out of ideas, out of touch, and running out of time so they will resort to smear tactics to try to change the subject. Watch the ad here.

New Battleground state polls from Time/CNN show former Red states turning Blue- conducted from 10-3 to 10-6. N.C. - Obama 49, McCain 49, Ohio - Obama 50, McCain 47, Wisconsin - Obama 51, McCain 46, Indiana - Obama 46, McCain 51, N.H. - Obama 53, McCain 45. Read more here. Wow! Indiana has not voted Democratic since the 1964 election.

European Union seeks unified approach to banking crisis - as economic problems spread globally, European countries are trying to unify their approach to the situation. One step was to raise guarantees on bank deposits to 50,000 euros. Sounds similar to the U.S. action increasing FDIC insurance on deposits from 100,000 to 250,000. The NY Times has more here.
