Dem Campaign Chatter 10-22-2008

George Wenschhof

Today, Obama is in Richmond and Leesburg, Virginia - It is being reported his grandmother broke her hip and is in serious condition. Obama will take Thursday and Friday off from the campaign trail to travel to Hawaii to be with her.

Biden is in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Colorado. Both Colorado and Virginia are trending Blue. Michelle Obama is in Jacksonville and Gainsville, Florida. Florida remains a toss up state.

--------------------

"Erratic" has been a good term to use to label McCain - "what he hasn't been is on your side" - It is now a ad. You can watch it here.

--------------------

Obama widens lead in national polls - NBC News/Wall Street Journal has it Obama 52%, McCain 42%. Governor Palin continues to fair poorly in the polls; Qualified? No - 55%, Negative - 47%. You can read more details here. ABC News/Washington Post has it Obama 53%, McCain 44%. More details here. Both polls were taken from 10-17 to 10-20-2008.

--------------------

McCarthyism revisited - once was bad enough fifty years ago when Senator Joseph McCarthy accused everyone of being a card carrying communist. As poll numbers continue to show McCain's chances dwindling, the Republican attacks are getting meaner. On MSNBC "Hardball" with Chris Matthews, Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann (R) said Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views. Read more and watch the clip here.

This was followed with five term North Carolina Congressman Robin Hayes (R) speaking at a rally and saying "liberals hate real Americans". Read more here.

Republican Vice-President candidate Sarah Palin, not wanting to be left out when speaking at a rally, said "some parts of the country were more patriotic than others". Realizing she had just stepped in it, tries to apologize to voters. You can watch her here.

Voters are hearing this nonsense and the phrase "Have you had enough? - It's time for a change!" is what comes to mind. Remember to vote on November 4.

--------------------

Republican National Committee spends $150,000 on clothes for Sarah Palin and family - wow, when the average American family is trying to figure out how to pay their mortgage or rent and put food on the table. Simply amazing - the shopping spree over the last month included stops at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nieman Marcus. Politico.com has more here.

--------------------

Pennsylvania to become battleground state - this state with 21 electoral votes has caught the attention of the McCain campaign. Primarily, due to states lost to Obama in the west. In addition to Pennsylvania, McCain still needs Florida, Ohio, and Virginia where Obama is neck and neck with him. The NY Times has more here. While Obama currently has a double digit lead in Pennsylvania, expect both Clintons to visit the state along with Obama prior to the election.

Let's hope that Rep Michele Bachmann, unfortunately the congresswoman representing my congressional district, has finally put her foot in her mouth one last time. We have been waiting years for her to self destruct. She is a homophobic, right wing fanatic. Her seat was viewed as safe until she made her comments, the seat is now viewed as a toss up.

She has been trying to spin her remarks and blame Chris Matthews for trapping her. If you watch the replay I think she had plenty of chances to stop talking and remove her foot. Her DFL opponent has raised close to a million dollars since she spoke out. If you don't believe like she does you are not patriotic. Well in my opinion her push for a MN constitutional ban against gay marriage is unAmerican. How American is it to push for for laws that deny other citizens basic civil rights?
