President Bush will speak via satellite and will most likely be introduced by his wife who is in St. Paul. For George W., this is quite a fall from grace, speaking via satellite during a not so prime time slot. Three years ago, President Bush was criticized for his lack of attention to the devastation from hurricane Katrina. Although, Hurricane Gustav did not hit New Orleans with the same force as Katrina, Bush wisely was in the general area this time. The speech is expected to be less than 8 minutes. He will speak of McCain's ability to keep our country safe. You can read some of the text of his speech here.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani got bumped from prime time today. Perhaps due to his moderate position on abortion, given the choice by McCain of Governor Sarah Palin as his VP running mate. Palin is a staunch pro-life supporter, who opposes abortion even in the case of incest and rape.
Instead, Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson gets the call for prime time. He ran for the Republican Party nomination, announcing late and bailing out early. Many viewers will know him as a actor on the sitcom "Law and Order". You can read some of the text of his speech here.
The other prime time speaker is Independent Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman. Egaad, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says it is ok for him to serve on Democratic committees in Congress. Eight years ago, he was running as the Democratic Party nominee for VP with Al Gore. He reportedly finished runner up to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the VP with McCain. Seemed the Republican leadership said no way - the same thing should be said by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid when committee appointments are made for next year. You can read some of the text from his speech here.
