Even though the voters in West Virginia gave Senator Hillary Clinton a substantial victory in their recent primary election, today Senator Byrd endorsed Senator Barack Obama. Obama also gained a delegate in the process as Byrd is a superdelegate.
Senator Byrd is over 90 years old and has had a long political life involving some dramatic changes in positions on certain issues. He admitted to having joined the KKK in the 1940s and he opposed civil rights legislation in the 1960s. He has since reversed his positions on those issues and has been a strong opponent of the war in Iraq. MSNBC FirstRead has more.
