Western Maryland Democratic Summit: April 11-12, 2008

The following notice was sent to me from Tom Slater who was one of the founders of this annual summit. Slater is also a former chair of the Frederick County Democratic State Central Committee. This very affordable event promises to be informative and fun. If you live in Western Maryland, you should put this on your calendar and plan to attend.

Please come to the 4th Annual Western Maryland Democratic Summit on April 11-12, 2008. The Summit is sponsored by the Western Maryland Democratic Caucus – an organization that represents the Democratic State Central Committees in Allegany, Garrett, Washington, Frederick, and Carroll counties.

The Summit is an opportunity for Democrats, Independents, and even a few Republicans perhaps, to get together, hear from our Democratic leaders, and make plans for the November election.

Greetings will be brought from Maryland's dynamic Democratic Party Chair Michael Cryor. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Thomas Schaller, who has appeared on WJZ Channel 13, Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," MSNBC's Hardball, National Public Radio, the Tavis Smiley Show and C-Span's Washington Journal. He also has a regular column in the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Schaller will discuss his book, "Whistling Past Dixie, How Democrats can win without the South." For anyone interested in this coming November election, Tom Schaller is someone worth listening to. He will speak at 9:00 Saturday morning.

Morning and afternoon breakout sessions include Recruiting and Training Precinct Chairs/DNC Neighborhood Program, The Road from the Past Leads to the Future: Congressman David J. Lewis and Other Notable Western Maryland Democrats Who Paved the Way (a historical perspective), and a panel discussion on Broadening the Democratic Base. There will also be an Exhibit Hall with displays on issues, candidates, and campaign technology.

State and national Democratic leaders who will address the participants will include Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler (morning), Governor Martin O'Malley and U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (lunch) and U.S. Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Jr. (dinner). Late afternoon panels will address state and national issues with an array of experts from the Democratic Party including Allegany Sheriff David Goad, Democratic 6th District nominee Jennifer Dougherty, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, and Maryland Delegates Sue Hecht, Galen Clagett, and Kevin Kelly.

Jennifer Dougherty will be hosting a hospitality room on Friday and Saturday nights. Contact Tom Slater at (301) 682-5601 for a brochure. Cost for the Summit is $85.00 per person which includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Rooms are available at Rocky Gap by calling 1 (800) 724-0828. We would appreciate if people would make reservations as soon as possible (hopefully by April 3, 2008 but that is not a hard and fast date).

This is a great opportunity for Democratic activists to network with like-minded people in Western Maryland.
