George Wenschhof Bio
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich continues his defiance of all that is swirling around him by announcing Roland Burris as the replacement to the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
The Governor was recently arrested for "pay-to-play" politics and is awaiting final charges from U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. In addition, the Illinois state legislature has created a committee to determine impeachment proceedings against the Governor.
Mr. Burris is a former state attorney and with Barack Obama's resignation of the Senate seat would be the only African-American serving in the Senate.
However, the appointment may not stand due to the concerns surrounding the impropriety of the Governor. Jesse White, the Illinois secretary of state has indicated he will not certify Burris as the replacement. In addition, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said the Democratic caucus will not seat any appointment by Governor Blagojevich. Politico.com has more on this story here.
