During an impromptu meeting with The City of Frederick administrator Josh Russin Monday morning at Starbucks, where I often write, a variety of topics were discussed. One, which caught my attention was when Josh asked me what I felt about about him beginning regularly scheduled meetings with members of the media.
Russin mentioned he believed the meetings would allow for individual questions and answers on topics of interest from members of the media. He further added he intended to use Susan Harding more in the role of Public Information Officer. A position, if my recollection is correct, was eliminated during the Republican Jeff Holtzinger administration.
Ms. Harding has long been employed in the mayor's office, working for both Republican and Democratic administrations and is well suited for this role.
I, of course agreed with Josh - who would oppose more transparency from an administration who has been anything but open with the press?
I received an email the next day from Ms. Harding to set up our monthly meeting date and time. I noticed on the email her official title is Public Information Coordinator.
In responding to and confirming the date and time for my meeting, I added this was a good proactive step, but a regularly scheduled press conference by Republican Mayor Randy McClement is also needed. Hopefully, that will also transpire in the near future.
City residents deserve open and transparent government and kudos to Russin for reaching out to the media.
Stay Tuned...

George - this is very good news. What I would hope to hear from both the Mayor and City Administrator is their strategic vision for the city, and how the city administration, residents, businesses and organizations (all stakeholders) can help to support that vision moving forward. Frederick is in a prime position to become a regional if not national leader in sustainable, high quality living. Much like the Tourism function has promoted the city as a wonderful destination, others can do this as well. kind regards,
Ed Hinde
