Presidential Debates: Modern Day Gladiators

George Wenschhof

Prior, to the Colosseum being built in Rome, Gladiators would fight in many amphitheaters across the empire, providing they would hold an audience, who would always weigh in on whether a life should be spared.

Not all gladiator fights ended with a turned thumb by the emperor.  But, there was always clearly a winner in this brutal spectator sport.

Today, Television and Internet coverage of the U.S. presidential and vice president debates result in 60 million viewers, a twenty-first century version of the Colosseum.

The debates are held to assist voters in determining the candidates they will support to hold the highest elected positions in the United States.

But, like the gladiators of ancient Rome, the debates have turned into a brutal spectator sport and hardly a trustworthy means for a voter to determine how they should cast their ballot.

The first presidential debate moderated by PBS Jim Lehrer displayed a desperate Republican Mitt Romney, who behind in the polls, was on the attack. Romney gave his best chameleon impression with statements devoid of truth, always ending his remarks with a fake quirky smile as he gazed off to the left.

All the while, President Obama absorbed the blows and instead of striking back, stayed with his message.

What followed illustrates modern day politics dominated by campaign communication directors, pundits and special interest groups. The spin room, already in operation prior to the debate, was working full bore to tell the voters what they had just witnessed.

Campaign communication directors were busy prior, during and following the debate, highlighting to the media the positives of what their candidates had said during the debate.

NBC commentator Chris Matthews; a progressive, was quick to denounce Obama for not fighting back more fiercely during the debate, citing example after example of the purported lies put forward by Romney during the debate.

Republican friendly commentators touted Romney had found his voice and was back in the race.

The spin had taken hold with progressives critical of lies from Romney, who became disappointed with the performance by Obama. Conservatives, bolstered by the spin, were giddy over a  perceived lackluster performance by the President.

Subsequent polling reflecting the spin showed a tightening of the race in the battleground states with Romney and Obama essentially tied among most likely voters nationwide.

Next up was the only vice president debate with the spin influencing the tone of the debate which resulted in a slug fest.  Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Vice President Joe Biden did not disappoint.  Biden was to Ryan what Romney had been to Obama in the first presidential debate.

Now, the spin masters are in full force and effect once again prior to the second of three presidential debates on October 16.  This debate will be a town hall forum with questions from undecided voters.

The candidate campaign staffs are now in a dizzy over the possibility moderator Candy Crowley of CNN may deviate from the agreed upon format and actually ask a follow up question, instead of merely serving as a prop for the questioners.

As the debate nears, Progressives and Conservatives are thirsting to see their candidate dominate the other in this debate.

Three presidential and one vice president debates in the month of October, prior to the November 6 election is one way to assist voters in determining their choice.

Democracy isn’t easy. But, unlimited campaign spending and the current presidential debate format leaves one longing for a better way.

We can do better.

Join Obama Campaign Kick-Off Call Tonight at 8:30 PM ET

George Wenschhof

Jim Messina, campaign manager for the Obama 2012 reelection campaign, sent supporters an email today inviting them to join in a telephone conference call tonight April 5th, with President Obama and Vice President Biden.

You can join in the conference call or listen live online with an RSVP here.

If tonight is not good for you, there will be another conference call with David Axelrod on Thursday April 7th, at 7:00 PM ET. You can RSVP to that call here.

This appears to be a continuation of the online strategy that worked so well for Obama in the 2008 election.

Stem Cell Research Banned by Judge's ruling -
in a ruling yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth issued a temporary ban on federal funding of stem cell research. Politico.com has more here.

In effect, it says the executive order expanding federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells signed by President Obama last year violates the intent of the Dickey-Wicker amendment approved by Congress in 1996.

Expect the government to appeal to a higher court.

This decision could easily be ratcheted up and made a campaign issue in the upcoming mid term elections.

---

Today, Vice President Joe Biden will give an update on the "787 billion Stimulus" bill -
he will be joined by Energy Secretary Steve Chu and will talk about investments in science and technology. Politico.com has more here.

The Obama administration attempted to highlight the success of the bill with planned announcements across the country entitled "Recovery Summer". Unfortunately, the planned effort to highlight the successes of the bill has fallen flat as unemployment has remained steady at 9.5%.

In addition to the lack of a jobs program, the Stimulus bill was so varied and diverse, the resulting effects of reduced spending on a particular area of the economy has had little positive outcome.

---

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) to call for Firing of Obama's Economic Team -
Budget Director Peter Orzag already saw the handwriting on the wall and left as has Christina Romer.

Boehner, citing continued high unemployment, will call for the ouster of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and White House Economic Adviser Larry Summers today at a speech in Cleveland, Ohio. The Washington Post has more here.

Democrats are already responding to the planned speech saying the Republicans will continue to criticize but offer no solutions. TheHill.com has more here.

The main reason Democrats remain competitive going into the mid term elections is the fact the Republican leadership of Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority leader John Boehner is so weak and ineffective.

O'Malley widens lead against Ehrlich in latest poll -
in a OpinionWorks survey released today by Center Maryland Maryland Democratic Governor Martin O'Malley leads former Governor Robert Ehrlich 47% to 41%.

In the Republican primary newcomer Brian Murphy, in spite of an endorsement from Sarah Palin, is only receiving 15% with Ehrlich receiving 75%.

However, the Baltimore Sun points out that many of the owners of the company conducting the polling have contributed to Democrats. In addition, two of the founding members; Steve Kearney was former communications director for O'Malley and Damian O'Doherty was a former aide to Baltimore County Executive James Smith. The Baltimore Sun has more here.

---

Shirley Sherrod to Meet with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today -
Ms. Sherrod was forced to resign after portions of a speech racist she had previously given which made her appear racist appeared on a conservative Blog. Subsequent airings of the entire speech proved the opposite. MSNBC.com has more here.

Let's see what job she is offered and whether she accepts.

Former President Jimmy Carter heads to North Korea to help win release of American -
Aijalon Mahli Gomes was recently sentenced to 8 years of hard labor for illegally entering the country.

Former President Bill Clinton was successful, less than a year ago, in gaining the release of two women journalists who had been jailed for illegal entry into N. Korea.

Yesterday, the Democratic National Committee voted on the 2012 presidential primary calendar -
Iowa will keep it's first in the nation date as they can set their caucus to February 6. The next three states in February will be New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. The rest of the states can set their primaries no earlier than March 1. You can read more here.

The broader problematic issues of Superdelgates and the awarding of delegates to candidates by state highlighted during the 2008 Democratic primary went largely unaddressed.

Vice President Joe Biden also spoke yesterday at the DNC convention meeting in St. Louis firing up the crowd by saying Democrats will still control Congress after the mid term elections this fall. The NY Times has more here.

---

Republican National Committee Short on Cash -
embattled chair Michael Steele has the misfortune of reporting only 5 million cash on hand prior to the mid term elections while also reporting a debt of 2 million. Politico.com has more here.

The DNC reported having 10.8 million cash on hand with a debt of 3.5 million.

Talks with Taliban in Afghanistan Underway -
without giving specifics, said Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) who is chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He is back from a trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan. You can read more here.

Presumably, the agreement would be for Taliban reintegration into Afghanistan society. This will be a difficult negotiation as the Taliban is a group of independent tribes across Afghanistan and into Pakistan who control various territory across those countries.

Obama makes four recess appointments -
a move made while Congress was on vacation. All four under level positions had been blocked by Republicans. Reuters.com has more here.

Many of the mid level administrative positions in government agencies are by presidential appointment, leading to the question as to why? Instead, they should be merit based and the thousands of these brown bag appointments discontinued.

---

Today, Vice President Joe Biden will address the DNC
- at their meeting in St. Louis at the Marriott Hotel. He will be rallying the troops prior to the mid term elections. The DNC sent out an email blast to supporters yesterday inviting them to tune in the watch Biden's speech beginning this morning at 10:50 AM ET by clicking on this link: http://my.democrats.org/VPSpeech.

Israel-Palestine Peace Talks To Resume -
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to make the announcement today. Both Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestine Authority President Mahmoud Abbas are expected to arrive in Washington September 2 to begin the direct talks. The NY Times has more here.

Border issues, the status of Jerusalem, the return of Palestinian refugees, and the security of Israel are some of the many issues to be discussed. U.S. Middle East Envoy George Mitchell has been the go between in the so-called "Proximity talks" between the two leaders and it was his efforts which led to the announcement of the direct talks.

O'Malley-Ehrlich tied in Maryland Governor race
- In a rematch of the close 2006 election won by Democrat Martin O'Malley. The latest Rasmussen poll has it O'Malley with 45% and Republican former governor Robert Ehrlich at 44%. Only 3% prefer another candidate and 8% remain undecided. Rasmussen.com has more here.

This poll reflects the uneasiness of voters today as registered Democrats in the state outnumber Republicans 2-1. The Independent voters unaffiliated with a political party may well determine the outcome of this race.

While the state has been spared the the nationwide 9.5% unemployment rate (Md. is at 7%), O'Malley has been hurt with the sloppy and ineffective roll out of slots which were suppose to help raise revenue for the state. Increased scrutiny of the less than effective Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development will also surely come as the campaign heats up.

However, Ehrlich has yet to detail any specifics on his proposals to help business and economic growth. Yesterday, he refused to acknowledge Maryland Democratic Party communications director Issac Salazar who had attended a Ehrlich event and tried to ask a question. The Baltimore Sun reported Salazar was trying to point out that it was during the Ehrlich administration that the fees for personal property returns required annually by small businesses, increased from $100 to $300. The Baltimore Sun has more here.

FirstRead.com has Maryland rated as leaning Democrat. In their top ten list of takeovers in Governors across the country, seven favored the Republican candidate. You can read more here.

---

Obama criticizes Republicans for blocking aid to small business -
he wants the senate to take up the proposal again when they reconvene. The bill which would increase lending to small business and reduce their taxes was unable to break a Republican filibuster - the vote was 58-42. TheHill.com has more here.

Unemployment which stands at 9.5% across the country, appears ready to jump as the summer is coming to an end and the mid term elections near - a difficult scenario for Democrats.

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Lineup for 7-18-2010

George Wenschhof

Expect a lot discussion on the upcoming mid term elections this Sunday morning. Republican and Democratic chairs of committees to elect their Representatives and Senators will be guests on NBC "Meet the Press". Also Fox News Sunday has Representatives Mike Pence (R-Ind.) and James Clyburn (D-S.C.).

The Immigration debate will heat up with New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Republican Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth appearing on CBS "Face The Nation".

Vice President Joe Biden, who always seems to provide a good sound bite for the main stream media, has the spotlight on him as he is the only guest on ABC "This Week"

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell gets to explain what he meant by his recent statement that Congress should place a moratorium on passing legislation on CNN "State of The Union". There is already a lot of voters who have not seen anything positive being offered from their Republican Representatives in Congress. Instead, the Republican strategy in Congress has simply been to say "No".

Yes We Can and The Dream Will Never Die! Health Care Reform Passes

George Wenschhof

The late Senator Edward Kennedy and his phrase "The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream will never die" is what comes to my mind after watching the House pass health care reform for Americans. He spent a lifetime advocating for those less fortunate and working tirelessly for health care reform.

A brain tumor kept him from seeing this day, but not before he had endorsed Barack Obama in the closely contested Democratic presidential primary in 2008 and helping him win the presidency.

Perhaps, it was fitting it was President Obama and his leadership which helped bring Democrats together to pass this legislation.

On a long day, at 10:45 PM ET, a day that will go down in history, the House voted 219-212 to concur with Senate amendment and passed health care reform. Numerous procedural delays were used by obstructionist Republicans, to no avail, in an attempt to derail the passage and to slow the approval process down.

As expected, no Republican voted for the bill, in spite of the fact over 200 Republican amendments were included in the bill.

After Republicans failed in an attempt to derail passage with a motion to recommit, the amendments to the bill to send to the Senate were passed with a 220-211 vote.

The day long session was punctuated by the late afternoon announcement by Representative Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) indicating he and his group of 6 had reached agreement with President Obama to vote "Yes" for the health care reform bill. Stupak and some other pro-life Democrats were concerned with the Senate bill language pertaining to the potential use of federal funds for abortions.

As I reported this morning, they had been working on a deal for the President to issue an executive order clarifying no federal funds would be used for abortions. They reached agreement this afternoon and the President has released the text of the executive order he will sign. You can read it
here.

Two votes which passed after this announcement, signaled passage of the bill was assured. The first was a procedural vote on rules which passed 228-202 and the second was the rule for debate which passed 224-206; both without a Republican voting in favor.

After the President signs the bill into law, the amendments voted on by the House will be taken up by the Senate using the "budget reconciliation" process where the Democrats will need a simple majority vote. Republicans are expected to continue their obstructionist ways and challenge many of these amendments. The senate parliamentarian is expected to get quite a work-out as a result.

Vice President Joe Biden may also become the man of the hour as he has the ability to break a 50-50 tie vote in the Senate and he has the authority to over rule the parliamentarian.

Finally, after more than a half century of U.S. Presidents; both Republican and Democrats, expressing their desire for health care reform for Americans, the time is here.

Today, President Barack Obama will meet with Bank Executives - about a dozen executives of the largest U.S. banks will gather at the White House. They will discuss regulatory reform, executive bonuses and other ways to stabilize the financial system. reuters.com has more here.

Obama announces more troops to go to Afghanistan - an additional 4,000 troops will be sent in addition to the 17,000 he already ordered to the country since taking office. He also announced he wants to triple aid to Pakistan to 1.5 billion a year for the next five years. The NY Times has more here.

The pundits are all quickly saying this is now Obama's war and they are right. The "surge" strategy that appears to have helped in Iraq may not be as successful in Afghanistan. Also, increasing financial aid to Pakistan when the government is presently labeled as "fragile' at best, may not be a good idea. The billions sent by the former Bush administration to prop up President Musharraf did little to help in the battle against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Some polls are showing the race between Democrat Scott Murphy and Republican Jim Tedisco as a toss up. MSNBC.com has more here. If Tedisco wins, what is a heavily registered Republican district, expect the Republican party to widely publicize this as an attempt to show dissatisfaction with the Obama administration.

Kathleen Sebelius Confirmation Hearings to be held next week - she is the last Cabinet member to be confirmed of the Obama administration. Washington D.C. close to receiving vote in Congress - the only city without a vote in Congress moved a little closer yesterday when the Senate voted 61-37 to add a floor vote to their Representative. Currently, their Representative could serve on House committees, but have no vote on the floor. The bill still needs to pass the House and is expected to do so easily. The strange part is a amendment attached to the senate bill repealing all of the gun control laws in the district. Expect this to be removed as the bill is reconciled. The Washington Post has more here.

CPAC set to hold straw poll for Republican Presidential candidates tomorrow - The Conservative Political Action Conference will conclude their three day meeting with the announcement of the results of who won the straw poll. The contenders for the dubious honor are all former or current Governors. The usual suspects include Jindal, Palin, Huckabee, Romney, Sanford, and Pawlenty. First, I wonder who will win and second, I wonder if the winner will flaunt the honor - egaad! MSNBC.com has more here.

Democratic Party Leaders not happy with Obama plan for withdrawal from Iraq - the issue is not the extension from 16 to 19 months but rather the change from all troops to two-thirds of the troops. The 50,000 Troops planned to remain in Iraq has angered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calf.), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), and Senator Charles Schumer (NY). Stay Tuned. Politico.com has more here.

The weekly address by President Barack Obama this morning focused on his Stimulus Bill entitled "America Recovery and Reinvestment Plan". The Senate last night appeared to have reached a compromise with a vote expected on Tuesday. Bloomberg.com has more here. Part of the compromise included a reduction in spending from 900 to 780 Billion in the Senate bill. However, keep in mind the House bill was 819 Billion so the 780 Billion Senate version is only 5% lower than the House version. Click on the picture below to watch the weekly address.

Irresponsible and Shameful are the words used by President Obama yesterday - he was referring to the Wall Street bankers who gave themselves 18 Billion in bonuses. This. at a time when they are accepting help from the government and taxpayers during this severe economic downturn. The WhiteHouse.gov blog has more here.

--------------------

Commerce Department releases more gloomy news on the economy - seems the decline of 3.8% in the last quarter of 2008 was the worst in a quarter since 1982. There are indications the first quarter decline in 2009 could be even higher. MSNBC.com has more here.

--------------------

Meanwhile, Exxon reports record 45.2 Billion profit for 2008 - their fourth quarter earnings were down by 33% from 2007, but the fourth quarter profit was still a staggering 7.8 Billion. A 7.8 Billion profit in a quarter when gas prices plunged and the country had it's worst decline in the economy in a quarter of a century. This could easily have some calling for some government intervention. You can read more here.

--------------------

A Republican for Commerce Secretary? - rumors are flying that Republican Senator Judd Gregg (NH) is seriously being considered for the position by the President. This Cabinet position has been open since New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson withdrew from his nomination.

The scuttlebutt that has everyone talking is the Governor of New Hampshire is a Democrat and would be able to pick the replacement should Gregg be picked for Commerce Secretary. A Democrat would most likely be picked to fill Gregg's position and if Al Franken survives the court challenge in Minnesota, this would give the Democrats 58 plus 2 Independent Senators (Lieberman-Conn. and Sanders - Vt.), giving them the magic 60 filibuster proof number of Senators.

In spite of the allure, do not expect this to happen. Politico.com has more here.

--------------------

Vice President Joe Biden to head Middle Class task force - President Obama was often critical of the George W. Bush administration and the Republican "trickle down" theory of economics. Biden has an editorial in USAToday.com you can read here. As part of their commitment to a change recognizing middle class challenges, a new White House website will be announced today astrongermiddleclass.org

--------------------

SCHIP approved by Senate 66-32 - after some reconciliation with the House bill, it will head to the President for signature. This twice vetoed bill by former President George W. Bush will provide health insurance to 11 million disadvantaged youth. This is a 4.1 million increase from the current 6.7 million children currently being served by the program. TheHill.com has more here.

--------------------

On the foreign policy front, new envoy Richard Holbrooke to visit Pakistan/Afghanistan - as George Mitchell stays busy in the Middle East, Holbrooke has plenty to be discussed here as well. India and Pakistan continues to be a potential flash point and the new Pakistan government could easily be classified as fragile. Afghanistan poses it's own unique issues and challenges as President Obama prepares to send an additional 20,000 troops to help stabilize the country. CNN.com has more here.

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Guests 1-25-2009

George Wenschhof Bio

This is the first Sunday morning the pundits will be referring to Barack Obama as Mr. President. The newly sworn in President has had a busy first several days on the job so expect lots of analysis and discussion Sunday morning.

Sure to be mentioned is the do-over swearing in performed by Chief Justice John Roberts at the White House. One aspiring CNN reporter tried to make a deal out of the fact media cameras were not invited to the do-over, taking a swipe at the transparency promised by the President. Hard to buy into that attempted "gotcha" moment by that reporter, when the Obama administration informed the press of the do-over, provided a photo and a audio of the swearing in, part two.

The real news was the signing of executive orders by President Obama to close Guantanamo Bay, ban waterboarding and all harsh interrogation techniques not allowed in the Army Field Manual, and the identification and closing of secret U.S. prisons located around the world. This was a clear and loud signal to the world that the U.S. was going to end the questionable actions undertaken under the George W. Bush administration.

Other executive orders signed by the President, included pay freezes for White House staffers making over $100,000, new ethics rules to be followed by staff, and a reversal of a Bush order, allowing U.S. funds for family planning organizations overseas..

The first round of confirmations of the incoming cabinet were finalized, including Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Holdup on confirmations for Eric Holder for Attorney General and Timothy Geithner for Treasury Secretary will also receive scrutiny this morning.

Expect some discussion this Sunday morning on the appointments of George Mitchell and Richard Holbrooke as special envoys to the Middle East and Pakistan/Afghanistan respectfully. Some pundits may say this is an immediate erosion of Clinton's power as Secretary of State. However, it only makes sense to have experts in certain foreign policy issues devoting full time toward resolution to problems in those areas.

The status of the President's Economic Stimulus bill will also be discussed. The President indicated he expected to have it on his desk for signature by mid February.

Of course all the gossip surrounding the withdraw by Caroline Kennedy from consideration for the vacant New York senate seat will receive attention. Also, the tongues will be wagging pertaining to Kristen Hillibrand, the new Senator picked by NY Governor David Paterson.

So plan to have your favorite coffee or tea nearby and tune in to enjoy this Sunday's "Talking Heads". The following is a list of the scheduled guests on the shows. As always, check your local listings for time and channel.

NBC "Meet The Press" - David Gregory scores with new Director of Economic Council, Lawrence Summers. Also appearing is House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Oh.). The roundtable includes Michelle Norris, Thomas Friedman, and Stephen Hayes.
