CNN is reporting that Creigh Deeds has won the Democratic Governor primary in Virginia. He easily beat both Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran. Deeds will go on to face Republican Bob McDonnell. CNN.com has more here.
AP called the race for Deeds with 63% of the precincts reporting and Deeds with 50% of the vote. Politico.com has more here.
Terry McAuliffe, who had previously been the chair of the Democratic National Committee, conceded to Deeds. McAuliffe had also been the national chair of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and had come from outside the state to run in his first election of his political career. Although McAuliffe was able to raise and spend huge sums of money from outside the state, it was to no avail.
As I live in the D.C. metropolitan area, I was able to see some of the cable TV ads runs by the McAuliffe campaign in the last days leading up to the election. He came across as a snake oil salesman or professional pitchman, so it did not surprise me he lost.
State Senator Creigh Deeds represents rural Virginia so expect the politicos to examine the vote by demographics and region prior to the general election. Also voter turnout will be closely studied as it was not expected the primary turnout would come anywhere close to the million plus voters last year in the Democratic presidential primary.
Stay tuned....
