START Ratification Expected Today - after several days of intense lobbying by the Obama administration, the debate in the senate on the START treaty came to a close yesterday by a vote of 67-28. Eleven Republicans broke with their leadership and voted for the treaty to proceed to a final vote. Unless, those Republicans who voted to end discussion have second thoughts, the treaty will be ratified today. The Washington Post has more here.

House and Senate Pass Continuing Resolution - to fund government until March 4. This sets up the incoming congress with having to deal with funding for the remainder of the fiscal year which ends on September 30. Politico.com has more here.

Obama Signs Repeal of D.A.D.T. - this morning, at a signing ceremony which included many who had fought hard for the repeal. A 60 day period must expire before the repeal goes into effect and then the military will have time to implement so changes will not necessarily be felt in the immediate future. White House Prepares Executive Order for Guantanamo Bay Prisoners - 174 prisoners remain and 48 of these the administration has determined to continue holding indefinitely. The executive order would provide for a systematic review of the prisoners being held and determination as to whether they continue to pose a threat - a type of parole board. Halliburton Settles Charges Against Cheney for 35 Million - charges had been filed by the Nigerian government against the former Vice President and others for bribery over a ten year period. The bribes were allegedly used to secure construction of a natural gas plant. TPM.com has more here.

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Guests 3-15-2009

Discussion of the ailing worldwide economy will be the focus of much of the discussion on Sunday morning and will continue to be so for some time. The Obama administration tried to give Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner some support as Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke and Lawrence Summers, the chair of the National Economic Council both gave public statements.

Geithner has been failing the public face test so look to see the Obama administration to continue to use others to be the public spokesman for the administration's efforts on reviving the economy. The good news is the Dow Jones gained over 700 points last week for the best weekly gain this year. The sobering news is the Dow is still at 50% of where it was 11/2 years ago.

Former Republican Vice President Richard Cheney will appear on CNN "State of the Union" with John King. Expect some discussion on allegations surfacing from NY Times reporter Seymour Hersch concerning "Hit Squads" operating out of the the Vice President's office during the George W. Bush administration.

Embattled chair of the Republican National Committee Michael Steele may receive some discussion. It appears with a two thirds vote of the members required to oust Mr. Steele, he will survive for a while longer in the position.

NBC "Meet The Press" - Dick Gregory will have Dr. Christina Romer who is chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Also appearing is Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) The roundtable discussion will include David Frum, Katty Kay, Travis Smiley and Steve Liesman.

ABC "This Week" - George Stephanopoulos will interview Lawrence Summers who is chair of the National Economic Council. Also appearing is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) The roundtable discussion will include George Will, Jim Ellis, Robert Kutter, and Frank Rich.

CBS "Face The Nation" - Bob Schieffer will also interview Lawrence Summers. NY Times Thomas Friedman is his other guest.

Fox News Sunday - Chris Wallace will have FDIC chairman Sheila Blair, Austan Goolsbee, Mark Zandi, Representative Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Senator Bob Corker (R- Tenn.).

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" 1-4-2009

This Sunday will mark the first Sunday of political discussion of the new year. It will also mark 16 days until the swearing in of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States.

As always, there is plenty of issues to discuss. One issue sure to be discussed is the seating of Roland Burris, appointed by embattled Governor Rod Blagojevich as the replacement for the vacant Barack Obama Senate seat in Illinois. Congress will be convening next week and what will the Democrats do when Mr. Burris shows up? Adding to the drama is he would be the only African-American U.S. Senator and there does not appear to be questions as to his character after a lifetime of public service.

Then there is Democrat Al Franken of Minnesota - will the vote count there be finalized? Highly doubtful and although Franken is currently leading by close to 50 votes do not expect him to be seated - but will he show up Tuesday and try? - and how about his opponent, incumbent Republican Norm Coleman? Don't expect him to be seated either.

Speaking of Senate seats; will Caroline Kennedy receive the appointment to fill the soon to be vacant Hillary Clinton New York seat? Although pressure is mounting on NY Governor Paterson to announce his choice, Hillary Clinton is not resigning until she is confirmed as Secretary of State.

The continuing Israel aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip will also capture the attention of the pundits today. Will the French achieve success in brokering a cease-fire or will Israel have begun a ground campaign inside Gaza? This conflict highlights the many international issues the incoming Obama administration will be facing when they assume office.

Also sure to be discussed is the fragile economy and the proposed stimulus plan by President-elect Obama.
