Sunday morning "Talking Heads" Lineup for 9-12-2010

George Wenschhof

This Sunday morning the political discussion will again focus on the economy and the upcoming mid term elections. Former Republican House and Senate Leaders; Dick Armey and Trent Lott will be guests on CNN "State of The Union". Armey and his "Freedom Works" organization helped to seed the rise of the tea party grassroots activist movement.

Austan Goolsbee was announced Friday as the replacement for outgoing Christina Romer as chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Reportedly, he is much more camera friendly, a requirement these days with twenty-four hour news. Romer came across as a grade school teacher and failed at delivering a succinct message of the Obama administration's economic policies. However, until unemployment begins to decline and the economy improves, Goolsbee will remain on the hot seat. Goolsbee will be on ABC "This Week" and on Fox News Sunday.

Whether or not more changes will take place within the Obama team is likely to receive some discussion when White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod appears on NBC "Meet The Press". Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is likely to step down after the mid term elections to run for the Mayor of Chicago. Who may replace him should be a topic with Maryland Democratic Representative and chair of the DCCC; Chris Van Hollen the latest addition to the rumor mill.

Also, the attention grabbing announcement of planned Quran burning by Florida preacher Terry Jones will get attention. New York Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf will appear on ABC "This Week". The latest on the on again, off again, planned burning of the Quran by the Reverend Terry Jones has been one of the wackiest stories of the last week. Rauf has said he has no plans to meet with Reverend Jones and has no plans to move the location of the new Mosque planned near ground zero in New york City. The latest announcement by Reverend Jones is there will be no Quran burning on Saturday and that he was heading to New York with hopes to meet with Imam Rauf.

With the anniversary of 9-11 falling on Saturday, Tom Kean who co-chaired the 9-11 commission will be a guest on CBS "Face The Nation".

NBC "Meet The Press" - David Axelrod, Rudi Giuliani

ABC "This Week" - Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, Austan Gollsbee

CBS "Face The Nation" - House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Tom Kean; co-chair of the 9-11 Commission.

CNN "State of The Union" - Dick Armey, Trent Lott

Fox News Sunday - Austan Goolbee, Newt Gingrich

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Lineup for 7-25-2010

George Wenschhof

The Wall Street Reform bill was finally passed and signed into law by President Obama this week and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has the dubious honor of trying to explain a very complicated, but necessary bill, to American voters. He will be on two of the morning shows; NBC "Meet the Press and ABC "This Week". Expect him to also be asked about the struggling economy and when unemployment numbers will finally drop across the country.

The unfortunate circumstances which led to the forced resignation of Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod has brought the spotlight on race in America and the proper role of the media. This situation will be discussed on most of the morning shows this Sunday with CBS "Face The Nation" having a panel discussion on the subject of race.

NBC "Meet The Press" - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Roundtable with David Brooks, EJ Dionne, Anita Dunn, Marc Morial, and Rick Santelli.

Health care reform passes in two crucial House committees - last night around 9:00 PM ET, the Energy and Commerce Committee passed 31-28 the America's Affordable Health Choices Act. All 23 Republicans opposed and were joined by 5 Democrats. The Ways and Means Committee had already passed a bill so now the two bills will be reconciled in the House. The NY Times has more here.

The passage of the bill out of committee prior to the August Congressional recess gives a boost to President Obama and his efforts to bring health care reform to Americans. There is still a long ways to go before a bill hits the president's desk to be signed. Stay tuned.

Three American Tourists taken captive in Iran - sure to inflame an already volatile relationship between Iran and the U.S. Early reports indicate three tourists were in the northern Kurdish village Sulaimaniya and went out hiking along an unmarked border area with Iran and were detained by Iranian security. Reuters.com has more here.

Makes one wonder - certainly not an area where tourists would knowingly go hiking. Stay tuned.

---------------------

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele spent $370,000 to win position last year - you may remember, it took the Republicans six rounds of balloting before Steele won with 91 of the 168 votes taken. Contributors included oil company executives who donated as much as $25,000 to his effort to win the chair. Questionable money has followed Steele throughout his career from when he reportedly was paid during his run for Lt. Governor of Maryland. TheHill.com has more here.

--------------------

Is Newt Gingrich back? - his group, "American Solutions for Winning the Future" raised 8.1 million in the first six months of this year. With Republican 2012 presidential hopefuls Sanford and Palin fading, is this a sign of strength for Gingrich? His chief operating officer Dan Varroney says the organization is not the start of a presidential campaign and instead is focused on finding solutions to the problems that exist today. Politico.com has more here.

I would not count out the man who fueled the Republican comeback in Congress the last time they were outnumbered when he was aided by his catchy slogan "Contract with America".

Saturday night, President Barack Obama arrived in Prague where he will be attending the EU Summit - he was greeted by Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus and Prime Minister Mirek Topolank. Obama immediately condemned the missile launch by North Korea and called upon the UN Security council to take punitive measures. The NY Times has more here.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has reported the missile did not make orbit and the various stages of the rocket and it's payload ended up in the Sea of japan and the Pacific Ocean. CNN.com has more here.

This morning in a speech delivered in Prague, President Obama called for a ban on testing of nuclear weapons. He went on to call for the elimination of the world's nuclear weapons. ThePage.time.com has the text of his speech and a video clip here.

It was the Czech republic and Poland where the George W. Bush administration had intended to place missiles as part of a missile shield. This had led to heightened tensions between Russia and the U.S. before President Obama indicated he would review the U.S. plan.

--------------------

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says U.S. should have disabled missile - appearing on Fox News Sunday, he ridiculed President Obama's Prague speech calling for the end of nuclear weapons. He went on to say you can't trust Russia and other nations. Politico.com has more here. Gingrich is fast rising to the top in a crowded field as the visible spokesman for the Republican party. It was Gingrich's "Contract with America" that led to the 1994 elections and republicans gaining power in Congress.

NATO agrees to send 5000 military personnel to Afghanistan - they will be used for military training and police. They will be helpful in providing security for the upcoming August elections. You can read more here.

Attorneys already in place for candidates in NY district 20 special election - as I suspected yesterday, this has all the signs of another long dragged out determination of who won. Both the Jim Tedisco (R) and Scott Murphy (D) campaign have hired lawyers to represent them. Prior to 6000 absentee ballots being counted the unofficial vote count has it exactly tied between the two candidates with about 154,000 votes cast. TheHill.com has more here.

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Guests 4-5-2009

George Wenschhof Bio

The past week has been an incredible week for President Barack Obama. He continues to ride a wave of popularity in both domestic and international issues. The week began with the announcement of a new auto bailout plan with conditions. One of those conditions was the ouster of Richard Wagoner, the CEO of General Motors. Tongues will move on that move this Sunday morning with some wondering why the White House has been tougher on the auto industry than the financial industry. New GM CEO Fritz Henderson will appear on NBC "Meet The Press".

In spite of unemployment hitting 8.5%, the highest in 26 years, the Dow Jones registered gains for the last four straight weeks and closed above 8000. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, perhaps bolstered by this news will be the guest on CBS "Face The Nation".

On Thursday, the House and the Senate voted to approve the President's 3.55 trillion budget in non-binding resolutions. The final approval is expected by the end of this month

President Obama has wowed them overseas so far and the first leg of his trip was agreement by the G-20 to provide over 1 trillion to the IMF along with adding new regulations to the financial markets. Along the way he met with Russian president Dimitry Medvedev and they agreed to a meeting in Moscow to discuss further nuclear arm reduction. Not satisfied with that, Obama also met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and the two agreed to a meeting in China by the end of the year.

Stops in France and Germany continued the positive vibes for Obama and the NATO summit in Prague is up next where cooperation in rebuilding Afghanistan will be discussed. Dr. Susan Rice, U.S. UN ambassador will be the guest on ABC "This Week".

It appears the Talking Heads" are a little weak with guests with foreign policy experience and that is a disappointment. However, that may be because everyone is overseas with the President. Nonetheless, the discussion will be great. So plan to tune in and watch.

The guests are listed below. Remember to check your local listing for time and channel.

NBC "Meet The Press" - Dick Gregory will interview new GM CEO Fritz Henderson. The roundtable discussion will include John Harwood, Katty Kay, Dr. Bill Rogers, and Joshua Cooper Ramo.

ABC "This Week" - George Stephanopoulos will have as his guest Dr. Susan Rice, the U.S. UN ambassador. The roundtable discussion will include George Will, David Frum, Richard Haas, and Martha Raddatz.

CBS "Face The Nation" - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will sit down with Bob Schieffer.

Fox News Sunday - Chris Wallace has Senior White House Adviser David Axelrod, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC), and Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.)

President Barack Obama is making the rounds today in London - breakfast with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and meetings with Russia and Chinese Leaders. After a meeting with Russia President Dimitry Medvedev, it was announced Obama would travel to Moscow for nuclear arm reduction talks in July. Reuters.com has more here. Obama will also travel to China at the end of the year to meet with China President Hu Jintao to discuss enhanced U.S. - Chinese relations and strengthening economic and financial cooperation. You can read more here.

At a press briefing with PM Gordon Brown, Obama indicated they expected cooperation among world leaders at the G-20 economic crisis summit tomorrow.

--------------------

White House Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers to visit Michigan today - Dr. Ed Montgomery will meet with Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) and her economic staff to discuss efforts being made by the auto task force. Granholm was critical of the firing of GM CEO Richard Wagoner by the Obama administration. WhiteHouse.gov has more here.

--------------------

Congressional election in New York another close one! - Democrat Scott Murphy is leading by only 65 votes over Republican Jim Tedisco with all precincts reporting. However, there are still 4100 absentee ballots to be counted. Over 150,000 votes were cast in the 20th district in the special election to replace Kristen Gillibrand who was named to fill the vacant Hillary Clinton U.S. Senate seat. While this is a heavily registered republican district, conservative Democrat Gillibrand had won and Obama received 51% of the vote in his election last year. The NY Times has more here.

--------------------

Meanwhile, Minnesota is still waiting for a U.S. Senator to be named - in a ruling that appears to favor democrat Al Franken, the court ruled to review 400 absentee ballots instead of the 1300 requested by republican Norm Coleman. Franken currently leads by 225 votes so Coleman would need to win 80% of these 400 absentee ballots to overtake Franken. The absentee ballots will be opened and reviewed in court on April 7. However, the likelihood of a Senator heading to Washington to be sworn in is remote as the Coleman campaign has indicated they will appeal the decision. Stay Tuned. CNN.com has more here.

--------------------

So much for increased White House vetting as Sebelius reveals she also owed back taxes - The last Obama nominee for a cabinet position indicated she had recently paid around $8,000 in back taxes when questioned by a senate sub committee yesterday. It was back taxes that derailed the nomination of Tom Daschle for this position of Secretary of Health and Human Services. With all the attention on AIG bonuses, the firing of GM Richard Wagoner and the President overseas, this is likely to receive little media attention and Sebelius is expected to be confirmed. Politico.com has more here.

--------------------

Is Gingrich on the way back? - after a miscommunication with the staff of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich was named to be the keynote speaker for a major Republican fundraising dinner in June. The Republican House and Senate fundraising committees are holding the fundraiser. You can read more here.

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Guests 3-8-2009

George Wenschhof Bio

You can now count on the economy being a major focus of the "Talking Heads" on Sunday morning. The recession is now teetering on the edge of a depression as unemployed has now reached a 25 year high at 8.1%. The Dow has lost over 50% in the last 18 months and there are no indications it will stabilize anytime soon.

The 787 billion Stimulus bill, the remaining portion of the 700 billion TARP bill, the newly announced 75 billion mortgage relief plan, and the stalled 410 billion Omnibus bill in Congress will all receive attention this morning. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geitner is especially on the hot seat as he fumbled the roll out of the revised bail out plan and now the top two aides he was about to nominate have announced they are withdrawing from consideration.

On the foreign policy front, expect discussion on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent trip to the Middle East and Europe. While in the Middle East, Clinton pledged financial aid to Palestinians in war torn Gaza, reaffirmed the U.S. support of Israel, and renewed commitment to a two state solution. While in Geneva, Clinton laid the groundwork for a future NATO conference on Afghanistan and "Re-Set" U.S. relations with Russia. A very busy week.

Sure to be mentioned will be the leaked news the President will be reversing former President George W. Bush limits on stem cell research. On Monday morning President Obama will sign an executive order reversing a ban on federal funds for stem cell research.

Some discussion may also occur surrounding the announcement by Sanjay Gupta to withdraw from consideration for the position of U.S. Surgeon General. Early buzz is former DNC chair Howard Dean is now under serious consideration for the position. We recently reported Dean had returned to Democracy for America, the organization he founded after his failed presidential bid in 2004.

As always, it promises to be an informative morning so plan to have your coffee and tea prepared and settle in for some good political discussion. Remember to check your local listings for time and channel. Below is a list of the "Talking Heads" shows and their scheduled guests.

NBC "Meet The Press" - Host David Gregory will have Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). The roundtable will include Newt Gingrich, Mort Zuckerman, Liaquat Ahamed and Erin Burnett.

ABC "This Week" - George Stephanopoulos will have Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Richard Shelby (R-AL), and Evan Bayh (D-IN). Also appearing will be US Chamber of Commerce Director Thomas Donohue.

CBS "Face The Nation" - Bob Schieffer will interview Peter Orszag, the White House Director of Office and Budget Management and Representative John Boehner (R-Oh). Also appearing will be Kathleen Parker and Michael Fletcher.

Fox News Sunday - Chris Wallace will have Senator John McCain (R-Az.) and Governor Tim Kaine (D-Va.). Kaine is also the newly elected chair of the Democratic National Committee.

CNN "State of The Union" - John King will also have White House Budget Director Peter Orszag. Also appearing will be Minority Whip representative Eric Cantor (R-Va.).

Sunday Morning "Talking Heads" Guests 2-8-2009

George Wenschhof Bio

This will be the third Sunday morning following the inauguration of President Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. The honeymoon period is effectively over as the President suffered setbacks with several of his Cabinet nominees withdrawing from consideration and his much ballyhooed Stimulus bill receiving critical scrutiny in the Senate.

With unemployment at 7.6% and consumer borrowing dropping at record numbers, expect the President's American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan to receive plenty of discussion. In spite of Obama saying there would be no pork included in his Stimulus bill, the House passed a 819 Billion bill which had many questionable funds which caused the bill to stall in the Senate. Many Republicans criticisms center on some of the funding is not creating jobs.

Friday night the Senate was still working on crafting a compromise with a target figure of 780 Billion which is down from the original 900 Billion Senate version of the bill. Currently, it looks like this will go to a vote with Sunday being a target date. It takes 60 votes to take it to a vote and that may be all the President gets on this bill.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is also scheduled to announce Monday new rules and guidelines for the remaining 350 Billion of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) - more commonly known as the bailout bill. This is likely to receive plenty of analysis from the pundits today as well.

White House counsel Larry Craig has now taken over the vetting process after repeated embarrassment, so let's see how the pundits feel he will do with those chosen to replace Tom Daschle for Secretary for Health and Human Services and Nancy Killefer for Chief Performance Officer. Latest rumor to be named for HHS Secretary is Governor Phil Bredesen (D-Tenn.) so expect this name to be floated along with former DNC chair Howard Dean.

On the foreign policy front, some discussion this morning may focus on George Mitchell, the Middle East Envoy just back from a visit of the region. He met with the President and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for a briefing of his visit this week.

The vice-President is also off to Germany to attend and speak at the annual Munich security conference. He is scheduled to speak Saturday so this speech may be dissected Sunday morning along with a comment from earlier in the week where he said there was a 30% chance they will get the Stimulus bill wrong. The latter comment drew a rebuke from White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod.

As always, plenty to discuss Sunday morning. Below is the list of the Sunday morning "Talking Heads" shows with the scheduled guests. Remember to check your local listings for time and channel.

NBC "Meet The Press" - David Gregory will have Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) along with Representatives Barney Frank (D-Ma.) and Mike Pence (R-In). Also appearing will be Washington Post senior Pentagon correspondent Tom Ricks.

ABC "This Week" - George Stephanopoulos will have chief economic adviser Lawrence Summers and newly named chair of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele. The roundtable discussion will include Newt Gingrich, George Will, Claire Shipman and Robert Reich.

CBS "Face The Nation" - Bob Schieffer will have Senators John McCain (R-Az.) and Kent Conrad (D-ND). Also appearing will be Christina Romer, chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Fox News Sunday - Chris Wallace will also have Lawrence Summers and Senator John Coryn (R-TX).

CNN "State of The Union" - John King will have a busy Sunday morning with lots of guests starting with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Also appearing will be Senators Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Charles Schumer (D-NY). Other scheduled guests include Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC), Jack Welch, former GE CEO, Katie Couric, CBS News Anchor and Dee Dee Myers, former White House press secretary.
