Daily Democratic Wire 2-4-2010

George Wenschhof

This morning, the President and First Lady will attend the National Prayer Breakfast in D.C. -
Obama is scheduled to make some remarks. An ethics group; Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is protesting against the president's appearance. Seems the prayer breakfast is sponsored by The Fellowship Foundation" also known as "The Family" which allegedly has ties to legislators in Uganda who recently were supporting making homosexuality illegal and punishable by death in their country. Tonight, President Obama will address the Democratic National Committee -
first, he will attend a reception followed by a dinner held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Both events are fundraisers for the DNC. The Washington Post has more here.

Republican Scott Brown to be sworn in today as Senator from Massachusetts -
the swearing in ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET. The date was move up a week after Republican leaders pressured Brown to request an earlier date. Seems they want that 41st vote in the senate real bad. TPM.com has more here.

An interesting note is the number of filibusters used by the Republicans in the first year of the Obama administration is equal to the entire number of filibusters used in the Senate in the 1950's and 1960's combined. Not sure if I was a Republican I would want to be known as an obstructionist at a time when the country needs elected officials working together to solve the problems facing Americans today.

CBS Anchor Katie Couric to Interview Obama during Super Bowl - it is scheduled to be live during the pre-game show. Politico.com has more here.

I wonder if she will ask him similar "difficult" questions to the ones she asked Sarah Palin; like "What newspapers do you read?".

Labor Department report shows initial unemployment claims remaining stable -
last week's claims of 480,000 was up slightly from the 472,000 the week before. However, the last seven weeks has been lower with promise the recession is nearing an end. Bloomberg.com has more here.
