I am pleased to announce the addition of FrederickPolitics.com to my website. FrederickPolitics.com will feature a one hour political discussion show entitled "All Things Political".
Some of the shows will feature a discussion with a local, state or federal elected official or candidate for office. Other shows will feature a discussion with members from the community on a local issue of interest.
Programing will begin in June. So, plan to visit the site and watch the future segments of "All Things Political". My first guest will be Susan Turnbull, chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.

President Obama has a full schedule of meetings today, beginning with BP Executives - sure to be discussed is the creation of an Escrow account to handle damages arising from the oil spill and the amount BP is willing to put in it. Also, look to see if BP agrees to allowing an independent commission award damages to claims.

AP/GfK poll released today shows voters want Democrats in control of Congress - 46% to 39% for Republicans. This is good news for Democrats heading into an off year mid term election. Voters also trusted Democrats more on the economy 47% - 42%. You can read more of the poll results here.

Financial Reform bill lobbied hard while in conference committee - Conference committee chair Barney Frank (D-Mass.) has his hands full as reconciliation between the House and Senate bills gets underway.
In addition, a group of 69 House centrist Democrats are trying to remove entirely Senator Blanche Lincoln's tough provisions on Banks trading in derivatives. TheHill.com has more here.

Arizona not finished with Immigration laws - the latest is a law proposed by state senator Russell Pierce which would deny U.S. citizenship to babies born to undocumented workers. MSNBC.com has more here.
All the more reason for Congress to act on comprehensive immigration reform as soon as possible. individual states enacting a series of potentially different laws is not the answer to this issue.

Obama Addresses the Nation on the BP Oil Spill

Click below to listen to President Obama's speech to the nation. It was his first speech given from the Oval office and he looked a little uncomfortable at times using his hands in a similar manner he uses when he is standing, but without the same effect.
The president gave a history time line of the event, the efforts to date and steps that will be taken in the future, including changes in the Minerals and Mining Department. The calling for BP to establish an escrow account to pay for claims and for an independent commission to approve pay-offs was previously leaked before the speech. He stopped short of saying how much the escrow account would be which is evidence that no agreement with BP has been reached. BP executives are meeting with President Obama tomorrow at the White House.
Obama touched on all the efforts taking place to protect wildlife, wetlands and coastal areas, but stopped short of saying this is what we are going to do.
He labeled it an epidemic that will take some time to clean up and said he will be putting together a committee, made of representatives from the states involved to develop a plan to restore the area.
As expected, the president also mentioned the need for the U.S. to move on our energy policies, but again stopped short of saying precisely what he would like to see passed by Congress.
A solid speech on a difficult issue, but I would not rate it among his best.
