MD Delegate Clagett to Announce Reelection Bid

George Wenschhof

Galen Clagett, a two term Democratic Delegate from District 3-A will formally announce his candidacy for reelection on January 11. I caught up with him recently and asked him why he was making his announcement so early. He responded "there had been some rumors circulating he may run for state senate in district 3. He wanted voters to know he was running for delegate and was serious about his commitment to his district and Frederick County."

It quickly became obvious during our conversation Clagett was indeed serious about his campaign for reelection as he already had in place his campaign organization. Mick Strine will be the campaign manager, Rick Wolfe the finance chair, Sue Houghton the operations chair and his son Thomas Clagett will be the campaign treasurer.

Clagett is a member of the powerful state appropriations committee and also serves as chairman of the public safety and administration subcommittee. Through these committees, he works closely with all the top elected officials in the state and has influence on capital expenditures.

I asked him what he hoped to accomplish over the next four years and he said "there was no question the economy will continue to be the number one issue facing the state and the country. He wanted to contribute to Maryland becoming number one in economic development which will create jobs while also working to bring spending under control and the budget in balance. Clagett added it is important to protect and promote the state educational system." To learn more, you can go to his website:

There are two state delegate positions in district 3-A which encompasses the City of Frederick and some adjacent areas. The other delegate position is held by Democrat Sue Hecht. At this point there have been no feelers put out by potential Republican or other Democratic candidates. The deadline for filing is July 6.

The announcement event for Galen Clagett will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 PM on January 11 at Mick's New American Bistro located at 207 West Patrick Street in Frederick, Maryland. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome and to RSVP, send an email to

Democracy for America to Support Local Candidates

George Wenschhof Bio

Democracy for America (DFA) is well known to progressives who have seen their support given to candidates for Congress and the successful Barack Obama for President campaign. It is important to realize DFA also provides assistance to candidates running for local office. City of Frederick, Maryland Democratic candidates for Mayor and Alderman, as well as other candidates for local office across the country, should take note of the following information. These candidates may wish to consider applying for consideration for assistance.

I just received a email from Charles Chamberlain, Political Director for DFA who provided the following information and asked that I help in providing this information to candidates.

Candidates who are interested in receiving a DFA endorsement can apply at: www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/Application

Candidates who receive a DFA-List endorsement receive a national organization of support which will aid the candidate in many ways. The questions the organization considers when endorsing a candidate are as follows:

  • Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
  • Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
  • Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
  • Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you are a candidate for a local office, take a few moments to check out their website and decide if you wish to apply for their endorsement and assistance in your campaign.
